Forever Side by Side in the Winter Garden: A Life That Continues to Bloom
Honoring the life and legacy of Maureen Benigno – Panel 93
Maureen (Ward) Benigno lived her life with a quiet, radiant grace, the kind that lifted others effortlessly and made the world gentler simply by her being in it. Born on December 12, 1943, in New York City and rooted deeply in her Irish heritage, she carried faith, humor, and unwavering devotion to her family through every chapter of her 81 years.
She had a gentle but powerful way of moving through the world. Whether as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, or grandmother, Maureen instinctively knew what was needed, offering care without being asked, strength without being seen, and love without limit. Her life was an expression of quiet service, deep loyalty, curiosity, courage, and the sort of humor that arrived at just the right moment, lightening even the heaviest of days.
She embraced life wholeheartedly, from world travels with her beloved husband of 58 years, Anthony, to ceramics, sewing, Mahjong, golf, her 20 years of project management at AMI, and the traditions she built with joyful intention. She led with faith and purpose, giving her time as a Camp Fire Girl Leader, CCD teacher, and Eucharistic minister, always offering more of herself where it might lift another.
In her final months, Maureen faced lung cancer with grace and dignity, holding onto the same steady spirit that guided her throughout her life. Her family was in awe of the strength, wit, and gentleness that remained steadfast until the end.
In a sacred and deeply meaningful connection, Maureen’s bloom, Panel 93 in the Winter Garden, rests beside the bloom honoring her granddaughter, Holly Wade (Bloom 130). Both passed from cancer, yet their blossoms now touch, symbolizing an eternal closeness that only heaven could arrange. Their intertwined light continues to offer comfort and hope to all who visit.
As the mother of Christine Wade, Executive Director of the Paula Takacs Foundation for Sarcoma Research, Maureen’s bloom also carries forward a mission of healing. Through the Seasons of Life installation, her tribute helps advance cancer research that brings hope to families walking a similar path.
Maureen’s spirit remains a guiding presence: steadfast, joyful, generous, faith-filled, and deeply loved. Her legacy continues to bloom in the lives of all who were blessed to know her, and now, through Seasons of Life, in the lives of countless others.
